Scientists in Australia are listening to the songs of whales to learn if the marine mammals suffer when exposed to manmade noises.

Scientists say the study, funded by the U.S. Office of Naval Research, involves observing whales off the coast of Australia's eastern Queensland state.

Lead researcher Michael Noad says many environmentalists and scientists believe sounds from shipping, oil exploration and military sonar could be harmful to whales.

Learning more about whale songs, Mr. Noad says, could lead to new findings on how the mammals react to noise.
