The designer of the privately-built SpaceShipOne says his team is ready to make an attempt to win the $10 million Ansari X Prize by carrying more weight on its next flight.

SpaceShipOne made aviation history last month when it became the first privately built vehicle to successfully fly into space.

The X Prize will be awarded to the first privately financed enterprise which can send a pilot and the weight equivalent of two passengers into suborbital flight in the same vehicle within a two-week period. The flights must take place by the end of 2004.

SpaceShipOne designer Burt Rutan announced Tuesday that his company will make its first attempt September 29 over the Mojave Desert in California.

Mr. Rutan's team must make its second attempt by October 13.

A Canadian team, the da Vinci Project, will reportedly make an attempt for the X Prize later this year.
